1953 , India

Born in Calcutta in 1953, Kishore received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature in 1973 from St. Xavier’s College and began working as a theatre lighting designer. He established Seagull Books in 1982 to provide a platform for high quality arts and culture publishing. With a focus firmly on the alternative and the experimental, and on the socially committed, Kishore’s priority has been to produce books that contribute something significant, archival, or fresh and new to the theory and practice of contemporary Indian arts and culture. In 1987, he created the Seagull Foundation for the Arts with support from the Ford Foundation so that Seagull could also provide resources to researchers and artists. Its objectives were to promote the performing and visual arts, to document and preserve cultural activity, to publish books and a theatre journal, plus arrange forums, seminars and exhibitions of good design. Kishore turned to photography, where he extensively documented female impersonators from Manipuri, Bengali and Punjabi theatre practices. In particular he photographed Chapal Bhaduri, a female impersonator of the Bengali folk theatre, Jatra, in a project entitled Performing the Goddess.

Kishore exhibited some of the pictures from Performing the Goddess as part of the group show ‘Woman/Goddess’, Indian Centre of Art and Culture, New York, 2001.Kishore lives and works in Kolkata
