  • About the work

Lacquered acrylic on paper.

"If we consider the artistic process as an invention, drawing is the heart of everything, because it is the beginning of every work, it is its mechanism of novelty and openness. If this beginning has no purpose, it is not built only as a project, the artist will be guided and directed solely by a sort of inner momentum, where the work appears as it proceeds with its realization. So while the drawing appears (the drawing appears in the world), the artist's identity is outlined in addition to his image. This progress is central, because it makes the artistic experience an experience of true knowledge. If then you ask me to talk about the content of the signs, I believe that my main evolution has been to remain with my images on an indefinable threshold, where what you see is not an abstraction, but neither a mimetic narration of an object and in this I put a lot of effort into it."

#CURATORPILL

Maurizio Donzelli (Brescia, Italy, 1958). Donzelli taught a class on Theory of Perception and Color Psychology for seven years at the NABA Academy of Brescia. The poetic elements of Donzelli's work have always focused on focal points of the artistic process: the drawing, the revelation of the image, the inevitability of the observer in the definition of the work, the relationship between light and color. One thing that runs right through the artist’s practice – something that is open to various levels of reading – is its existence as a conceptual act transmogrified into sign and colour, unstable and changeable in form through an ongoing relationship with the gaze that would welcome and rework it in its own sensibility.

About the Artists

1958 Brescia, Italy

Maurizio Donzelli was born in 1958 in Brescia, where he lives and works; he taught Theory of Perception and Color Psychology for seven years at the NABA Academy of Brescia. The poetic elements of Donzelli's work have always focused on some focal points of the artistic process: the drawing, the revelation of the image, the inevitability of the observer in the definition of the work, the relationship between light and color. The practice of drawing is the intellectual and technical tool with which Donzelli compares the artistic and philosophical reflection with the themes of immateriality and the temporary nature of the image, with its character of analogy or, more generally, of transfiguration and transformation.

Donzelli has exhibited his works in numerous solo shows, in galleries and institutions such as: Cortesi Gallery, London (2017) and Lugano (2016); Eduardo Secci Contemporary Gallery, Florence (2015); Palazzo Altemps, Rome (2015); Giacomo Guidi Gallery, Rome (2015); Palazzo Beccaguti Cavriani, Mantova (2013); Palazzo Fortuny, Venice (2012); Caterina Tognon Gallery, Venice (2009); Galleria Massimo Minini, Brescia (2007); 41 Artecontemporanea, Turin (2006); Bullseye Gallery, Portland (2005); Caterina Tognon Contemporary Art, Bergamo (2004); Gamec, Bergamo (2004); National Institute for Graphics, Palazzo Fontana di Trevi, Rome (2003); Neon, Bologna (2000). He has also exhibited with other artists in group exhibitions, in Galleries and Institutions such as (most recent exhibitions): Shenzhen Contemporary Art Biennale, Luohu Art Museum, Shenzhen (2018), Intuition, Palazzo Fortuny, Venice (2017), Eduardo Secci Contemporany, Florence (2017), Gallery of Art at Temple University Rome (2016), Unitet States Embassy Rome, Rome (2015); Esprit Nouveau Pavilion, Bologna (2014); Galleria Gagliardi Art System, Turin (2014); Milan Triennale, Milan (2013); Galleria Della Biennale Malindi, Kenya (2013); Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Bergamo (2013); International Museum of Ceramic Design, Cerro di Laveno (2013); Santa Giulia Museum, Brescia (2013); The Art is Mobile, Milan (2012); Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea, Milan (2010); Wunderlkammern Gallery, Rome (2009); Carlo Bilotti Museum, Aranceria of Villa Borghese, Rome (2009).
