About the Artist

1982 Milan, Italy

Matteo Negri is an Italian visual artist born in S.Donato Milanese (MI) in 1982, recognized for creating various works of art. After graduating in sculpture at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera - Milan in 2003, the artist created numerous installations for exhibitions at art galleries, public spaces and art fairs in Italy and abroad (including Paris and Berlin). His artistic practice uses materials from stone to ceramic, resin and plastic, all in expressive pop colours. The clear split between form and meaning is also something one sees elsewhere in popular culture, where clever marketing can turn even the most ugly or boring products into into curious objects of desire. A series of his artworks starts from a close inspection of the children's building material Lego. In this series, Negri uses Lego as a metaphor for children's inherent desire to build and create their own personalities. The freedom and self-expression Lego appears to offer, is quickly funneled into archetypical, linear forms which are compatible with the geometry of the Lego system.

Matteo Negri was born in 1982 in Milan, where he graduated at the Brera Academy with a degree in sculpture. After graduating at the Academy of Fine Arts in 2003, the artist created numerous installations for exhibitions at art galleries, public spaces and art fairs in Italy and abroad, including Paris and Berlin.

Negri first dedicated himself to a project called Mines, based on a subversion of the idea of objects, splitting form and meaning. Using real, decommissioned bombs, depth-charges and mines, he explores how bright colors and unexpected settings can turn a destructive weapon into something resembling a large gemstone. The giant reproduction of objects moves the attention of the spectator from the real use to the aesthetic seduction coming out of the single pieces. This clear split between form and meaning is also something one sees elsewhere in popular culture, where clever marketing can turn any given products into curious objects of desire.

In Negri's work, the system itself is subverted, and self-determination is given the space to play itself out. Matteo Negri currently lives and works in Milan.

"My artistic practice is aimed to analyze the perceptive role of the surface and the color, both in the field of sculpture and of artworks of a two-dimensional nature. In particular I deeply analyzed geometrical aspect, also to the phenomenon of chromatic variability and mirror reflection, which I used as alienating devices capable of altering the ordinary perception of volumes and planes. Thanks to this mode, the work stops being a fixed and absolute form, since it kinetically activates a relationship with the context and with the same observer who, in some way, contaminate it in a game of continuous visual reflex. The materials that I love most are aluminum, colored paper, glass and iridescent films that allow, with their magical charm, to go beyond a static and monolithic vision of the usual art-work."

ABC-ARTE's activity is based on the promotion and diffusion of contemporary artistic languages, focusing mainly on two directions: the support towards artists of new generation, who experiment with languages and formats, and the study of XXth century international masters, with a preference towards abstraction and especially gestural abstraction. In both...
