About the Artists

Paris, France

Born in Paris, Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien (France, Guadeloupe, Ivory Coast) has lived in Paris since leaving the Ivory Coast in 2004 during the civil war.

Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien works in a variety of mediums including textiles, clothing, drawing, sculpture, photography, video-performance, printmaking, painting, and installation. Marie-Claire makes new forms inspired by traditional matriarchal objects from Akan institutions in the Ivory Coast that serve to weigh the value of things.

MANLANBIEN creates ephemeral poetic narratives in perpetual renewal, creating pieces that are "witnesses" and "traces" of a past history or event. Pieces of the order of the totem and in a research of the order of the feminine. She is also interested in the complex relationship between everyday life, universal popular culture and specific traditional practices.

She creates encounters between industrial materials such as aluminum, copper and brass with natural materials such as raffia fiber, rope, wood and shells...

Marie-Claire creates encounters between the elements of various cultures that she makes cohabit, while surpassing them in a syncretism that unites them.

MANLANBIEN pursues her research through the elaboration of installations and pieces with changing modulations at each exhibition, like a game of assemblages that would have no rules. Through the installations she creates and sets up, Marie-Claire creates stories and poetic narratives with a myriad of cultural influences resulting in a "plural identity".
