1986 Fão, Portugal

Mariana Barrote, (Fão, 1986), currently lives in Viana do Castelo. She graduated in fine arts at the Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto and currently is taking a Master’s degree in drawing at the FBAUP. Her drawings seem to be a search for motion. Simple lines outlined in charcoal or Indian ink that appears to be floating on paper. It is the material that guides the contour and then, strange figurines take shape, so vigorously draw and yet so light and delicate. Mariana’s work is charged by the imagery of fables, myths and older legends that aligned with the simplicity of her technique evoke a certain primitive expression and rhythm. Her research and practice take place in the aggregation of images and representations capable of reflecting the body’s own dynamics: vitality; violence; presence and death. Through
her paintings, but also drawings and recently the experimentation with video, she constructs narratives whose deciphering
can be multiple.
