  • About the work

Marinčič draws inspiration from ancient figures, such as those linked to the tauromachy myth, which we can admire in the Palace of Knossos in Crete. The core of her research revolves around movement and rhythm applied in shapes. That is also reflected by her technique, destined to crystallize itself in stillness, because of the short hardening time of the plastic materials she uses for her works. The action of sculpting itself can be considered as a dance between the artist and her work: she achieves the desired outcome once the material is completely dried. It is a rhythmic movement of shapes, dealing with each other while building the subject. The plastic harmony of form seeks to express a body in action, discharging to the ground its powerful physical strength. In Marinčič’s sculpture, the contact point of the subjects with the ground is always an expression of power. The hoof or the foot hit the ground: the sculpture takes on its shape, in front of us.

About the Artists

1983 Ljubljana, Slovenia

Leya Marinčič and her mother Slavica Štrukelj-Kokoravec make a duo called “Dance of Energy”. Their poetics strongly revolves about a shared passion for body gestures and expressiveness. The underlying concept is to try to use the gestures and meaningful strength of a dancing body, channel those powerful movements into a method of execution.
Times, rhythm, expressive intention, muscle and nerve strain perfectly overlap in dance performance: the creation of an artistic work becomes, in this perspective, a performative act in itself for these two artists. Animals and dancers are Leya Marinčič’s favourite topics. Movement is at the heart of this Slovenian sculptor poetics.   The bull, the horse, the ballerina, they all use gestures which she senses like a shared dance imbued with shared energy released by the succession of action and stillness.
