With the recent dystopian setting of 2020, Jian was moved to paint a small collection titled ''SPEAKS FOR ITSELF” that would outline police brutality and racism towards black & brown people. The artwork highlights themes of "devil cops" & "racial discrimination". It also references the late Jean Michel Basquiat and victim of police brutality, Michael Stewart, who was outnumbered and murdered by police officers on September 15th, 1983. The subsequent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and countless others, infuriated Tan to act. Prior to these events, the artist had also studied and familiarised himself with the words of Minister Louis Farrakhan. Therefore, further channelling the natural activist within Tan to encapsulate this pain in hopes to recognise, remember and advance reformation.Jian Tan was born in Malaysia and later migrated with his family to Adelaide, Australia in 2009. In spite of his Chinese/ Malaysian background, Tan spent a significant amount of time with friends of African descent. Tan is a multi-dimensional artist who subscribes to belief that art should be purposeful, intuitive and relevant to its original intention.

'Research is highly important to my process, I love applying new knowledge or new insight into my pieces. My mission as an artist is to disturb the comfort and comfort the disturbed. I gather my knowledge from reading history, science and biography books. I also love analysing music from all eras and genre, such as Jazz, Blues, Lo-fi and Hip Hop. I also feel that I am a natural activist, therefore it is seemingly unavoidable that I speak about global and societal issues through my art. As an artist, I'd like to think my pieces will continue to grow after my existence. It is important to me that my life's work will inspire and help those in the present and the future.'
