About the Artist

1958 , France

Born in Gap, France, in 1958. Lives and works in Paris. He is largely self-taught, although he did spend some time at the University of Montreal in Quebec to learn more about the history of modern and contemporary art. In 1989-1990 a joint project on nomadic pastoralists and their sedentarisation took him to Djibouti with the support of a 'Villa Medicis Hors les Murs' grant. In 1992, he spent some time in residence at the Institut Français in Naples. In 1995, with the support of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, he left for a residency in Johannesburg and Soweto, South Africa. In 1997, he was welcomed by the Institut Français in Thessaloniki to pursue the graphic work he had begun in Africa. He identifies with Jeff Wall's brilliant comment about how an artist's true role is not to destroy or violently attack the pictorial tradition to which he belongs but to explore its legitimacy by integrating a critical dimension into his work. Jérôme Borel explains, "I paint abstract paintings with figurative motifs. Each of them is a possible response to the questions life poses."
