Italian sculptor, goldsmith, engraver and set designer. Gio Pomodoro shared with his brother Arnaldo a passion for sculpture, understood as a co-presence of tensions. Although he changed materials throughout his artistic career , he favored stone and marble and always remained faithful to his stylistic language. This engraving represents what has just been said: a round shape is represented with compositions inside, shaped as if they were a hard, rough stone sculpture that convey the weight of the material itself. The colors used by the artist were chosen from gradations of brown on a beige background, so as to give the work a plastic and material tension despite the fact that it is not a sculpture.
On the lower left is the embossed stamp of the printer Vigna Antoniniana, Rome and the publisher 2RC, Rome.
The work is signed at lower right and numbered 58/72 at lower left.
1930 Orciano di Pesaro, Italy
Giò Pomodoro (1930-2002) was an Italian sculptor, printmaker, and stage designer. In 1954 he moved to Milan, where he associated with leading avant-garde artists and started making jewelry. He then began to produce reverse reliefs in clay and also formed assemblages of various materials, including wood, textiles, and plaster subsequently cast in metal.
During the 1960s, he developed several series of sculptures, which explored a range of abstract shapes, usually with smooth undulating surfaces. In his later career, Pomodoro regularly received public commissions and produced a number of large outdoor structures.
His brother is the sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro.
