About the Artists

Arenzano, Italy

He held his first solo exhibition in 1971 in Genoa at the Galleria La Bertesca, focusing on the dynamics of the plane - form - color relationships.

In 1973 he began to work on new materials alternative to oil on canvas and created his first material pieces by exclusively examining the surface and its linguistic data. In June 1975, he participated in the exhibition Pittura analitica (Analytical Painting) curated by Klaus Honnef and Catherine Millet, with paintings in cement that revealed the problems related to the space of analysis offered by the materiality of the work.

His participation in Documenta 6 (Kassel, 1977) marks a partial discontinuity with his previous work, due to a conceptual reinterpretation of the artist's work (and function). From 1979, on this basis, he embarked on a path of reflection and research that led him to work and exhibit overseas, between Washington, Mexico City and Panama City. 

In 1981 he confronted the themes of the Transavantgarde by participating in the exhibition Pittura in radice (Painting in Root) by Achille Bonito Oliva and thus opening up to figuration, which however is perceived and rendered above all in conceptual terms. A further step in the direction of the interpenetration between figurative and conceptual is made with the experience of Short memory painting (Milan, 1982), curated by Viana Conti, recording the "incursions" of the artist who inserts his figure and his optics in some masterpieces of nineteenth - and twentieth century art.

In 1985 he resumed his research on the material that he tackled by marking the rhythm of interiority on the sign score of the surface. Around the mid-nineties he returned to conceptual painting, painting in which many of his previous experiences were settled and resolved: the cement of the conceptual, the forms of a long frequentation of the geometric abstract, the harshness of a surface reminiscent of the travails of the Transavantgarde, an unusual combination of material and geometry capable of probing and revealing the intimate algebraic, rational nature of reality.


The latest works, presented in group exhibitions, reveal an openness to compositional solutions guided by the concept of accumulation (Leo Lecci, Una ricerca in costante evoluzione - Galleria 911, La Spezia, 2005).


Currently his experimentation is directed to the use of new materials conceived for industrial use where in the work there is a continuous process of analytical research.
