Enrico Baj (Milano, Italy, 1924-2003). During his whole life, Baj was very active in the intellectual and political Italian scene. Such activism was reflected in all his works, acting as an ironic, sarcastic and often grotesque critic to the social and civil Italian panorama. Baj was a representative of the Italian Artistic Avantgarde, and he founded both the Nuclear Painting Movement, in 1952, and the International pour un Bauhaus Imaginiste Mouvement , in 1954. To realize his works, he often used collage of different materials and his most famous subjects were Generals and Military parades. Being always strongly influenced by his contemporaneity, his criticism towards what he was assisting, both in Italy and around the world, increased during the 70’s. Thus, his artistic creation began to be contaminated by the Kitsch culture, that he claimed to be the one and only style able to represent the decadence of that time.

Each week Rossella Farinotti, our curator, selects 6 interesting artworks on Kooness choosing artists from different generations, mediums, countries and approaches to contemporary art, indicating the reasons why it’s worth understanding the artwork.
