  • About the work

A storm, 2017, pastel on paper, cm 50x65, Ed. Unique

The imagery of Elena Ricci draws on a pictorial repertoire rooted in tradition, proposing a contemporary exploration through her elaboration in the light of her many references to photography and cinema.

The reference to an iconographic atmosphere from the past itself becomes a poetic tool capable of revaluating the pictorial experience as a moment of reflection on her avant-gardist harbingers. The immersion in themes that re-emerge from another time makes it possible to designate new trajectories of imagery that graft onto the fascination and reappraisal of features of European pictorial culture. In Ricci’s work Northern cultural values persevere, underlining a tendency towards darkness and  introspection, and which may be summed up in a liking for expressionist archetypes, especially clear in her anti-naturalistic use of colour. Ricci’s preference for the figurative is coupled with colour, which the artist draws on for its evocative and symbolic power, thus recording the emotional distortions of reality. In these terms, Elena Ricci’s painting adheres to an interiorised visionary experience, one that favours the spiritual dimension.
