Steel on concrete base
Units 1/1
1983 , South Africa
Casper Versluis is a South African artist born in 1983 & based in Johannesburg. He specializes in sculpture. His steel creations emphasize the beauty of simplicity.
Having traveled extensively throughout the African continent, Casper’s creations are inspired by the diversity in culture and the artistic expressions thereof. The African land and its people have been his educators, as he strives to express the intricacies of what it means to be human.
The primary method of design is based on stereo-metric construction achieving form through the description of space rather than mass. This introduces a degree of lightness to sculpture that can often be regarded as heavy in a state of solidity. It also expresses a strong influence of cubism through deconstructing the objects and emphasizing key facets and planes. It highlights unusual aspects of the work such as angles, surfaces, planes, corners, curves, colors, and dimensions. The play of light and shadows emphasizes force in design. the fluidity of design demonstrates movement and dynamism which very purposely evoke emotional engagement.
His choice to design artwork around a base of outlines, insinuation, and suggestion also serves to help express many of the vulnerabilities in the human element he seeks to present. All artworks are made from low-carbon steel through a process of cutting, forging, welding, chemical-material treatments, and concrete casting.
