Artists' inspiration for the series "When India meets Greece"

Since childhood, my mind used to be filled with a wonderful feeling at the very thought of the Greek civilization. I had read about it, seen it in pictures and had talked about it with a few people several times which helped in nurturing the initial emotion I had for that country. I had been dreaming of an opportunity to interact with this culture through my art. When I finally visited Thessaloniki in Greece I immediately felt how gifted this place is. From the very first day I felt a tremendous inspiration in me and started preparing myself for a greater project. An art exhibition was finalized after holding talks with Govedarou Art Gallery. I started studying and planning its layout during my short stay in Greece. It struck me that both Greece and India have been the lands of two mighty emperors, Alexander and Ashoka and of two great philosophers, Aristotle and Buddha as well. I find a remarkable resemblance in the ancient sculptures and cultures of the two countries. Further, the people of both countries are extremely hospitable. My main aim was to highlight the subtle golden bridge between our two cultures, lifestyles, languages and emotions. With that end in view, I have used symbolic objects like the vase, the bird, the sun, the torch, archeological pillars, Greek and Indian alphabets, numerals and contemporary colors. I have created a strong foothold with all these objects and envisioned diver’s forms from various angles. Above all, I have tried to portray the glorious ideals of our two historic civilizations, their art and architecture with all their underlying mysteries and emotions which have been the food for thought of mankind for centuries. I have tried to highlight the two great heroes, Alexander and Ashoka as well as the two great philosophers Buddha and Aristotle in my works. I have tried to see the mysterious past in the light of the present and create a strong link between the two cultures which has upheld their respective glories for thousands of years. As such, I have myself tried to comprehend the nature of the people, the culture, the lifestyle, love contemplation, faith, consciousness and emotions of these two countries.
