Every picture is a unique piece. The project is composed of the photographic work and the research of the right frame for each image. All the frames are from the last century, they come from antique markets and are unique pieces.

IL RESPIRO DI POVEGLIA (POVEGLIA’S BREATH) A small boat moves slowly in the mist. Towards a fate. From Malamocco, where life has found its way, crossing the “Orfano Canal”, towards the island of Poveglia. After all, already from the canal, that fate is absence. Named after the great number of soldiers who lost their lives during the war between the Venetians and the Franks led by Pippin of Italy, it is like an announcement of life leaving places, inhabiting them with memories, images, empty spaces. Where memory, like water, like fog, fills the emptiness.Poveglia was a mental hospital, a military base, a place of political exile, a hospital for the plague. For others it has been a place of pain, because someone suffered on it, to the point of taking their own lives. Or, at least, so it is said. For others it was a business dream, wrecked in expectations. For others it is a haunted island. For you it will be a journey, between history and imagination, between lives passing. Because it was not the purpose of this book to reconstruct the history of the island, deny its legends, confirm its fascinations. That is up to historians. Find out, if it intrigues you, who the voices you are listening to might be. Try to give them a face. Or rather not. And listen to the voices of Poveglia, which ultimately belong to us all. And maybe, in the end, you will discover they are everyone's lives. Because pain and fear, anger and hope are not the exclusive heritage of any place. Except that in some symbolical places, at times, they are relegated. Because the fog makes the outlines uncertain, and it's nice to get lost looking for lives that are not ours. To understand, at last, how much they tell us about ourselves.
