  • About the work

Mixed Media On Paper.

Having started out with huge oil painting chock-a-block with detail, he has continuously distilled technique and fine-tuned his focus so much so that even his language has changed.

Not only in the subject matter, but this progression of ideas has also been like a peeling back of layers in each successive work. Reducing color, Clutter, size as well as the layering that was characteristic of his earlier works, his current work has become more austere, and elemental but conversely, the depth of expression has become more intimate, more in-tune with the worker and the subject.

In the latter half of this work, he has eliminated even color to suggest not just the blurring of the lines between the man and the metal but the total boundary-less amalgamation of the scrap and the worker- giving life to the scrape by making it an integral part of the human being. Where does one begin and the other end?

In his canvas the self is given over to the experience; he paints monumental human forms dissolved into its location.

About the Artists

1962 Vadodara, India

Apurva Desai’s works reflect a realistic vision of India, and they are among the most advanced examples of contemporary Indian art. Apurva Desai was born in Vadodra (Baroda) in 1962 and took his diploma in painting from C.N. College, Ahmedabad, and M.A. in painting from M.S. University, Baroda in 1989. He represents a Gujarat that is very different from that of Narendra Modi or Shankarinh Vaghela or of caste heroes such as Bhatiji. He paints and communicates the industrial reality that is Gujarat and the rest of India today. He has over the past 15 years, done a series of paintings on the dying industrial scene of Ahmedabad, on the mines of Madhya Pradesh, on Calcutta (Kolkata), the city of rickshaw-pullers, trade unions and the red-flay, the ship-breaking yards of Along. In fact, he has lived for extended periods of time on these sites. He works in the open lie the impressionists. His reason for concentrating on the industrial environment is succinct. He says: “I always feel life is much larger than art. The revolutionary ideas of creation always rage from the basis of the transformation into living canvases.”

Thanks to his power graphically to describe what he sees, his responses to his visits all over the world are a joy to listen to, meriting the very matrix on which his intentions flow, the images are more like “pleasure and pain b\objectified.” But many of his works manage to exude an air of disquiet and disenchantment with the molten state of modern living, he compares an exhibition of the remains of pop art when he was in London on the Charles Wallace Fellowship. Apurva has long been known to relate his art to the relative brimming of experience and memory. There must be more to art than meets the eye.
