Chromogenic print.

This chromogenic print is one in a series of 15 photographs. They are available individually or as a set. This work is in an edition of 7.

A large, multi-stored renovated condo building sits on the concrete shoreline in this intimate chromogenic print. This image is one of a series of landscape photographs taken from the porthole of a ship sailing the St. Lawrence River from I^les de la Madeleine to the Port of Montreal. Hickox presents the porthole as a viewing device mimicking a lens, isolating observation and the movement of the ship. The porthole replaces the framing mechanism of the camera, while the movement of the ship provides a constructed vantage point for viewing. The distortions in color and the markings on the images are caused by both the thickness of the porthole’s glass as well as the effects of salt water and weathering.  April Hickox has been a lens based artist, teacher and independent curator for over 35 years. Her practice includes photography, film, video and installation works. Her work is based in narratives, the passage from one experience to another in the life process encompassing history, memory and site. Hickox studied photography and graphic design at the Ontario College of Art where she is an associate professor of photography at the Ontario College of Art and Design University, Toronto. She has been awarded multiple grants from the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council and was founding Director of Gallery 44 for photography in Toronto.
