This work is part of a series of work produced by the artist between October 2010 and the start of 2011 at the Leipzig Art Programme.

A contemporary interpretation of a historical position through the processes of painting from an outsider's perspective, or more accurately a displacement, was the primary motivating force behind the Leipzig body of works.

These paintings address the duality of nationalism as opposed to the contemporary conditions of displacement and reflect upon its contribution to the artist’s image making process. This includes ideas about migration, nationalism, fundamentalism, globalisation and historical influences on the commercialised production of the visual art world.

During this winter period at the Spinnerei, Leipzig, a connection was made between the artist’s work and the city’s rich culture, especially the history of the printed image, as well as with the history of social realist painting.

About the Artist

1976 Sydney, Australia

Anthony White is an Australian abstract painter who was born in Sydney in 1976. He creates gestural abstract paintings informed by an awareness of surface and physicality. He currently lives and works in Paris, France.


Education

White graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the National Art School in Sydney and studied at the New York Studio School Marathon Program in New York City. He completed a residency at the Vermont Studio Centre in 2008 and has completed two Artist in Residences at La Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, in 2009 and 2010.


Technique

White's practice incorporates multiple disciplines including drawing, painting and collage. His focus balances between the physical act of painting, on elements such as gesture, surface and physicality, and historical and cultural issues relevant to contemporary image making. He explores various methods and techniques, including the Italian Pentimenti method, a process of building up layers and allowing the earlier layers to be visible underneath; decollage, a process opposite of collage, which involves cutting or tearing away materials rather than adding them; and dechirage, a form of partial decollage, which involves distressing layers of paper in order to create a three-dimensional effect on the surface of a work.


Inspiration

White's work is about surface and physicality. The depth and drama of his painted surfaces create dimensional realms that interplay with light and space, allowing interpretation of multiple levels, from the formal to the visceral to the contemplative. He finds inspiration in urban environments, natural landscapes and in found objects. His painterly, gestural style is influenced by the abstract action painters of the 1950's New York School and the Gutai movement from Japan. He also finds inspiration in multi-disciplinary, dimensional abstract works such as Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau project and Robert Rauschenberg's combines.


Collections

White's work is included in numerous private collections as well as in public collections, including the National Portrait Collection at The Tweed River Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre in Australia


Exhibitions

White's work has been exhibited internationally, including in solo shows in Paris, Melbourne, Sydney and Hong Kong and in group exhibitions in London, Paris, New York, Sydney, Hong Kong and Leipzig.
