  • About the work

#CURATORPILL
Alexis Cruces (Tampico, Mexico, 1987). In his work, the Mexican painter depicts a very peculiar, ironic and personal vision of reality. He uses symbols from the Mexican popular culture and mixes them with entities resembling vehicles travelling through the landscape.

At the same time, the landscape creates an analogy of thought acting as a reminder for the internalized cult of occidental objects. In his most recent series “Private Scenes”, he uses elements from current Mexican history, where illegal activities such as corruption and drug trafficking stand out with the opulence that comes with it. This series is clearly influenced by contemporary icons such as David Hockney, KAWS and Jeff Koons.

Each week Rossella Farinotti, our curator, selects 6 interesting artworks on Kooness choosing artists from different generations, mediums, countries and approaches to contemporary art, indicating the reasons why it’s worth understanding the artwork.

In his work Cruces shows a clear connection with architecture, the academic path he decided to abandon. However, despite he never graduated from his major, he has a vivid interest for the subject, particurarly in regards to cities' configuration and transformation, subjects strictly linked to Street and Graffiti Art, which he has been practicing for 15 years.

About the Artist

1987 Tampico, Mexico

In In his work Cruces shows a clear connection with architecture, the academic path he decided to abandon. However, despite he never graduated from his major, he has a vivid interest for the subject, particurarly in regards to cities' configuration and transformation, subjects strictly linked to Street and Graffiti Art, which he has been practicing for 15 years.

The artist shows his work in a particular and reconstructed vision, beginning with symbols framed within popular culture with entities that can be identified as vehicles travel through some landscape. At the same time, this landscape poses an analogy of a thought of internalized cult to the occidental object.

In his most recent series “Private Scenes”, he uses elements from current mexican history, where delinquent activities such as corruption and drug trafficking stand out with the opulence that comes with it. This series takes clear influence on certain works from Hockney, and other characters present on the works of artists such as KAWS and Jeff Koons that have become contemporary icons.
