About the Artists

1988 , Italy

Alessandro Vasapolli was born in Turin, Italy, in 1988. Grows up in a dual environment, his grandfather’s artistic legacy and his own interest in the arts on one side, the scientific nature of the family business on the other. This combination of elements brings him to pursue studies in economics, while at the same time following his passion for photography. He graduates with honours at ESCP Europe, obtaining a triple degree in economics, in Italian, English and French. Always photographer, during his college years he turns his interest towards fashion photography, dedicating all his spare time searching for his identity as a photographer. Arrived in London in 2010, he starts working for the first time for several fashion magazines, like Schon, Contributor, 1883 Magazine, Sheer, thus standing out on the London scene and shooting celebrities like Irina Lazareanu, Misha Barton, Dionne Bromfield, Colin Morgan. Brought by his studies to Paris, which subsequently became the center of his artistic life, he carries out his degrees and keeps collaborating with magazine like Tirade, That, Velour. Subsequently he gains experience working as assistant for Paolo Roversi and Mario Testino. In parallel with this growth opportunity, his personal aesthetic vision keeps evolving, which brings him to his first job for Vogue. Among the others, he has shot for, United Colors of Benetton, Battistoni, Harris Wharf London, K-Way, Robe di Kappa, Tonatto Profumi and lives torn between the United Kingdom, France and Italy. He currently brings forward several projects and he is working with Franco Curletto and Michele Guaschino for the realization of a book and pertinent exhibitions. Peculiarity of Alessandro’s work is his deep interest for the study of colours. Over time he carries forward his research on colour and, thanks to his scientific background, after years of efforts he succeeds in creating a personal and completely new method for the processing of colours in photography. This method sees the creation of a three-dimensional mathematical model, which associated with a native file from the camera, remaps the entirety of colours. Despite the significant digital component of this process, the source of everything is an extensive work in the darkroom, since the film is the raw material for the development of these three-dimensional formulas. The possibility to create chromatic combinations which would not be obtainable neither with the current available post-producing software nor with the traditional analogic methods, represent another point of strength of this method. To Alessandro the ultimate goal of this proceeding is the creation of special colour combinations, which contribute to convey the emotional content of his works. The main feeling in his work is disillusion, which is generated from the clashing of expectations and reality. This sensation, swaying between inadequacy and unfulfilled, has its origin in the artist’s personal vision of the world. The aesthetic search for beauty in his works, is perceived as the only relief from the brutality of reality. At the same time, the disillusion expressed by the portrait subjects acts as undeniable bond with that same reality from which he’s trying to escape. Therefore task of the artist is to take charge of the negative sentiment, rework it and transform it in beauty that gives comfort.
