Often viewed as symbols of light and dark in the still life genre, flowers are rejuvenated in the works of Bosnian-born painter Alesandro Ljubicic whose vibrant examinations of color and texture and wide heavy-handed strokes convey a deep emotional response to nature’s beauty. He creates his compositions based on snapshots of floral arrangements, turning Instagram photos into a collage in Photoshop to determine color balance and harmony before rigorously painting them in a spontaneous manner. The result, as in Wherever Life Plants, Bloom With Grace (2020), are lively, vivid oil paintings that avoid the stiffness of the still life genre. A finalist for numerous awards, Ljubicic earned a BFA from Sydney’s National Art School.
