1977 , Chile

In his multidisciplinary practice, Alejandro Cardenas depicts sinewy, surreal figures who lounge in spare landscapes or interiors. With acrylics, gouache, watercolors, and aluminum sculpture, the Chilean artist places his languid forms amid gridded backdrops and spare geometries that evoke architectural renderings and retro computer programs. Cardenas received his BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art in 2000. Before he committed to painting and sculpture, he worked in a number of creative fields including illustration, graphic design, and videography. Cardenas also served as the lead textile designer and art director for the fashion label Proenza Schouler and was a founding member of the interdisciplinary arts collective Lansing-Dreiden, where he produced music and literature in addition to fine art. He has exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Basel, Tokyo, and Miami and was included in an exhibition (with Lansing-Dreiden) at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.
