  • Curriculum Vitae

Tony Oursler (born 1957) is an American multimedia and installation artist. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the California Institute for the Arts, Valencia, California in 1979. His art covers a range of mediums working with video, sculpture, installation, performance and painting. The artist currently lives and works in New York City. He is married to painter Jacqueline Humphries.

Member of a rock group, Poetics, together with colleagues Mike Kelley and John Miller, also artists, during his career he has collaborated with Constance DeJong, Tony Conrad and with Dan Graham and Sonic Youth. The multimedia works that made him famous are videos projected in three dimensions, often on spherical surfaces, which accentuate the expressive charge of the subject, a face in the act of speaking, observing or screaming. By combining sculpture, multimedia projections and recordings of the human voice, Oursler seeks interaction with the public and the animation of psychological and philosophical concepts within an almost dreamlike space: great attention is given to light (see for example his Streetlight installation from 1997 or Optics from 1999, which examined the polarity of light through a dark room).

In 2013 he signed the direction of the video clip Where are we now? by David Bowie.
