Tavar Zawacki (USA, 1981), known until 2016 with the pseudonym ABOVE, is an American artist who lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Encouraged by a family of artists, he began an early graffiti production in California in 1996 taking his pieces of art in 100 cities and in over 60 different countries. In all his work, the artist shows a remarkable graphic mastery that has allowed to create a powerful and distinctive visual language over the years. This force is evident both in the political and social stencils under the name of ABOVE and in the new harmonies of sought-after shapes and colors conceived as Tavar Zawacki. The metamorphosis of the artist did not happen only from the stylistic point of view, but also from the personal view:

‘’Neil Armstrong said it best ‘It’s one small step for man, but a giant leap for mankind.’ It’s strange but I felt like I’ve accomplished the impossible when I decided I was ready to make my step to coming out of my shadow, and start creating new works with my name, Tavar Zawacki. It’s a small step for most people to look at, but it allows me complete freedom to create new artworks.’’ – Tavar Zawacki

His works are characterized by a variety of applications and design solutions without limits, from his typical upward-pointing arrows to geometries of all kinds, supported by the use of different painting techniques including Op Art and trompe-l’oeil, generating the creation of optical games and illusions of depth with the manipulation of shadows. Tavar’s avant-garde painting style, both for his murals and for his paintings and sculptures, is thus distinguished by a vast field of colors and a geometric abstraction that places the viewer in a perceptual dialogue.

METAMORPHOSIS:   168 page hardcover book Metamorphosis is the second published monograph by the Californian born, Berlin-based visual artist Tavar Zawacki - and the first under his real name.

Metamorphosis covers Tavar Zawacki's last 3 years of creative works, from his seminal 2014 Remix exhibition in Detroit at Inner State Gallery to his latest and most ambitious exhibition to date at Urban Spree Galerie in September 2017. Metamorphosis covers many of his large scale outdoor murals during that period and illustrates how the artist navigates between his indoor and outdoor works and the influences thereof.

Metamorphosis is a very personal account of Tavar's creative process and thinking, where painful disruptions are essential to create something new and meaningful.

The book is published by Urban Spree Books, Berlin Germany, September 2017.

PASSPORT: 156 page hardcover book documenting the artworks and travels of Tavar Zawacki in over 50 countries from 2004 to 2010.

Zero+ Publishing,  Los Angeles, California. 2011

Artist Shepard Fairey wrote the introduction for Passport saying,

"I first encountered Above's art on the streets of Paris in early 2003. His large scale trademark arrows were painted on roll down gates, trucks and storefronts with impressive coverage throughout the city. Above is extraordinarily driven. To paraphrase Radiohead, "ambition can make you look pretty ugly," but in Above’s case, his ambition makes the streets look very engaging. I am very impressed by Above’s diligence, but after I got to know him and his artwork more, I began to realize that his output is not evidence of selfish ego, but of a lust for life, a utopian life, where his generosity, and curiosity, and his pursuit of creativity and social-consciousness have led him around the world making more friends than enemies.

Above made the time to act as tour guide for me and my wife and our two young daughters in a city he knows well and we didn’t. The gesture made me greatly value Above’s friendship and reinforced my belief that what you give is what you get. The Karma Police are not coming for Above even if the police vandal squad is."
