Musah Swallah

"My latest series is a tribute to my late father, Swallah Musah and Black people who love and embrace their natural hair as a part of their identity. Amongst Black people, the expression of beauty and style has long been communicated through hairstyles. With more Black people embracing their natural, hair unique cuts and bold colors have become the norm. The haircuts depicted in each portrait are representative of the unique ways in which black people have and continue to style their hair with the help of talented barbers and stylists. In the 80s and 90s, in Accra, Nima, my father served as a community barber in an open-air barbershop where he cut the hair of men and women, boys and girls, the young and old including newborn babies. I recall watching my dad with wonder as he cut and styled the hair of his patrons. Little did I know he was an artist himself."
