  • About the Artist

Luigi Pellanda was born in Bassano del Grappa in 1964. He is a self-taught artist who has cultivated his passion for art since the early seventies, when he experimented with multiple artistic disciplines, moving from music, to ceramics, to painting, with casual naturalness. What represent him deeply is the vision of Caravaggio's paintings which are inspired him because of the contrasts of light and shadow.

In 1980, at the age of sixteen, he already wrote music and lyrics and, with his composition based on a text by Flanin, he won the song contest "The golden rose". From here begins a path of singer-songwriter who takes him on several stages alongside important national artists, a path that he will leave five years later to devote himself exclusively to painting and sculpture. In the same period (1980) Pellanda started to model clay in the older brother's artistic ceramics company and he collaborated as a designer, engaging in personal and more contemporary research, leaving the traditional canons of ceramic form.

The passion for nature became a starting point and inspiration for paintings on wood that engage his personal research for most of the eighties. In 1991 he devoted himself intensely to the study of still life. The first Personal Exhibition in Bassano del Grappa (Vicenza) will definitely mark his artistic and professional career. In 1993, he collaborated with well-known art galleries on a national level, participating in the most important contemporary art fairs. In 1996, after admiring an etching by Giovanni Barbisan in an exhibition on engraving at the Bassano del Grappa museum, he became passionate about engraving art and makes a series of engravings personally edited and printed in his studio. In 2002 he created his first exhibition "Anthological 1986/2002", personally curated and sponsored by the Municipality of Marostica (Vicenza), in which a hundred pictorial and sculptural works are exhibited to the public in the halls of the prestigious Lower Castle. The exhibition was visited by more than nine thousand visitors in just fifteen days.

In 2002 he began an exclusive collaboration with the Galleria d'Arte Cinquantasei in Bologna which will end in 2017, bringing the dissemination of his works to national level through exposure in most important Italian art fairs: Bari, Bologna, Brescia, Catania, Florence, Forlì ", Genoa, Padua, Reggio Emilia, Verona, Cremona, Modena, Perugia, Bergamo, Naples, Turin, Vicenza, Viterbo, Milan, Parma, etc. In 2003 he already had about eighty solo exhibitions to his credit. He has exhibited in Dallas (USA), Cologne (Germany), and Klagenfurt (Austria). Among the most important exhibitions we mention: Anthology at the lower Castle of Marostica, Vicenza, Solo exhibition at the Cinquantasei Gallery, Bologna, 2003; Figures and Figures.

From Favretto to Pellanda, edited by S. Pegoraro, Bologna, 2003; Personal, San Paolo Private Banking, Padua, 2004; Anthological with Works from 1985 to 2005, curated by R. Bossaglia, Galleria Cinquantasei, Bologna, 2005; Mito Auto Moto 2, Motor Show, Bologna, 2006; The survey on the twentieth century, edited by C. Poppi, Galleria Cinquantasei, Bologna, 2007; First and Second 900 curated by E. Serri, Bologna, Galleria Cinquantasei, 2009. In the same year he was awarded the International Humorists Award in Marostica for the Cartoon section. In 2011 he was invited to take part to the 54° Venice Biennale, in the Italian Pavilion curated by Vittorio Sgarbi.

In 2012, 2013 and 2014 he was invited to exhibit with a personal exhibition at one of the most important Asian artistic events "Art Revolution Taipei" (Taiwan). In 2016 an anthological exhibition "30 Years of Art" is dedicated to him at the Cinquantasei Gallery in Bologna. The photography that accompanied him behind the scenes for these first 30 years of his career, in 2016, alongside painting, becomes in all respects a his new art form, maintaining the play of light and shadow characteristic of his paintings.
