  • About the Artist

Born in 1993, Lisa Ouakil lives and works in Paris and Montreuil.

She graduated in 2017 from the École Nationale Supérieure de Paris-Cergy after a formative period in Chicago, where she interned with artist Catherine Sullivan and produced a first solo show in 2016, she obtained her DNSEP, and became a member of the Collectif S.P.O.R.T.S.

Lisa Ouakil's plastic work is mainly articulated around painting. It is always deeply linked to the notion of displacement, whether it is geographical, effectively physical, or embodied in a projection of the gaze elsewhere. Each canvas is a moment of change between reality and fiction, between the extraction of an image and its overcoming.

Most often derived from photographs, her paintings develop around the analogy between the pictorial material and the flesh, the notions of fragmentation of the body and of landscape, with particular attention to the work of color.

She regularly exhibits in Paris (Villa Belleville, Galerie Épisodique).

The artist was selected for the November Painting Prize in Vitry and more recently exhibited at the Biennale de Gentilly (2019). She completed several artist residencies, notably with the Curry Vavart Collective in Paris and at the Dedazo Art Residency in Chiapas (Mexico, 2019).

In June 2021, she will exhibit again at Galerie Épisodique, in collaboration with curator Gaya Goldcymer.

As part of the S.P.O.R.T.S Collective, she will exhibit at the Consulate (Paris, 2018) and at the Galerie Éphémère (Montreuil, 2019). In 2020, she participates in Dynamiques du Contre, curated by Elora Weill-Engerer. The S.P.O.R.T.S Collective will present her work in 2022 at the Centre Tignous d'Art Contemporain de Montreuil in an exhibition curated by Jeanne Barral.
