Born in Erkner near Berlin. Son of the poet Gerhard Hauptmann.

 

1903

First trip to Paris, encounters Bonnard, Vuillard, Denis and Maillol, student of the "Akademie Julian".

 

1903-04

Pupil of Lovis Corinth in Berlin

 

1904-09

Studies at the Weimar Art Academy with Hans Olde, student of Ludwig von Hofmann, friendship with Hans Arp, Henry van de Velde and Edvard Munch. First stay on Sylt.

 

1907

Travels to Greece with Gerhard Hauptmann and Ludwig von Hofmann.

 

1909-12

Second stay in Paris. Meets Paul Signac while painting. First pointillist works are created.  Studies at the "Académie Ranson", meets the Fauvists.

 

1911-14

Member of the "Société des Artistes Indépendants", invited by the Brücke Group to join.

 

1913-19

Hamburg Dockenhuden.

 

1914

Visits Otto Müller and Edvard Munch in Berlin.

 

1915-18

Military service Dresden. Founding member of the "Freie Sezession Berlin".

 

1925

Hamburg becomes his new place of residence.

 

1928-33

Member and vice-chairman of the "Hamburg Secession".

 

1945

Re-foundation of the "Hamburgische Sezession" and becomes first chairman

 

1955-65

Vice-president of the "Freie Akademie der Künste" in Hamburg and lecturer at the Landeskunstschule am Lerchenfeld.

 

1961

Awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.

 

1965

Honorary President of the "Freie Akademie der Künste" in Hamburg.

 

1973

Died in Hamburg on September 28.
