  • About the Artist
Ivan Cattaneo (Bergamo, March 18, 1953) is an Italian artist, songwriter and painter. Childhood and adolescence Until the age of 18 he lived in Pianico, a characteristic village in the province of Bergamo located next to Lake Iseo. At the age of twelve he participated in the selections of the Zecchino d'Oro and at the age of fifteen at the Festival degli Unknown in Ariccia. While attending the artistic high school he learned to play the guitar, studied music and began playing in some local Blues groups, all fans of Frank Zappa and John Mayall. The Seventies and Early SuccessesExempted from military service for his "extravagance." He met Nanni Ricordi, who made him join the independent label Ultima Spiaggia, for which he recorded his first album in 1975: UOAEI. first success: MariaBatman. In the promotion of the disc there is a strong use of multimedia, and Cattaneo invents the theory of TATTOUDITOVISTAOLFATTOGUSTO (T.U.V.O.G), writing a book with this title attached to the LP. Also in advance of fashions and new trends, he invents the punk character of a very young Anna Oxa in Sanremo '78 who decrees her immediate success, and is godfather and collaborator of the first groups. punk-rock of the Italian scene of the period (Revolver, Elektroshock), as well as, in the early eighties, the launch of singers such as Down Mitchell, Patrizia Di Malta of the Italian Group and Diana Est. In 1979 he recorded Superivan, in collaboration with Colombo and with Premiata Forneria Marconi The dawn of the eighties and the era of Polisex In 1980 Ivan ends his relationship with the Ultima Spiaggia record company, thus putting an end to the period of alternative labels, and records the album Urlo for the CGD label, probably his best work. To give him his first big success is the single Polisex, destined to become his most popular song ever. Polisex soon became a sort of anthem of the so-called alternatives in the Milan of the eighties, widely broadcast by all radio stations and well received by critics as well. The temporary retirement Despite the enormous success obtained with the two revival albums, Ivan feels that he cannot express his art and that he has become only an interpreter of old hits; in fact, the artist realizes that he has strayed too far from his original idea as a songwriter. He therefore decides to break with the record company and, embittered and disappointed by the world of discography and television, he retires from his musical career. As a last constraint imposed on him by the CGD, Cattaneo published in 1986 a latest revival album entitled Forbidden to minors. From 1987 he became a vegetarian. Following his retirement from the music scene, Cattaneo devoted himself to painting, presenting in 1989 the exhibition 100 Gioconde Haiku , which will be exhibited throughout Italy, even in various discos of the peninsula. A pictorial journey taken up on a more continuous basis also through the exhibition that he has decided to hold at our Gallery, with his personal exhibition entitled Visi Di / visi.
