Henry Miller

Henry Miller was born in 1960 in Berkeley, California. His mother, a musician and father, a teacher, encouraged their only child to explore a wide array of pursuits. In addition to achieving academic honours and excelling in athletics and theatre, Henry exhibited a flair for drawing and painting.

It was not until he placed highly in a juried art show for high school students that Miller considered his passion for creating art a realistic pursuit. Miller passed up a number of academic scholarships in other fields to study the fine arts at Arizona State University in Tempe. After completing his studies, he traveled extensively working as a set designer for various film and theatre companies.

Miller always maintained his focus on painting, carrying his canvasses to galleries as he traveled the United States and Europe. In 1988, with a number of gallery shows to his credit and an enthusiastic reception from the art world, he opened a studio and began working as a painter and printmaker full-time. Miller was heavily influenced by modern abstract painters such as Mark Rothko, Ellsworth Kelly and Kenneth Noland and specifically credits Richard Deibenkorn’s “Ocean Park:” series with giving hi the inspiration and courage to, “interpret my own ineffable experiences, emotions and knowledge using colour and shape”. The process for him is one of connecting. “I am continually striving to create images the eye can touch and the soul can hold,“ remarks Miller. “Art should be an emotionally tactile experience.”

Henry Miller’s works on canvas and paper have been shown in galleries worldwide and are included in many private and corporate collections. He and his wife, Haley, reside in Half Moon Bay, California.
