"Playing with memory"

The person in our society, his intimacy, his political integration: this is the painter's subject. The basic theme of all her works is the memory, the collective memory.

Over the decades, Gaby Kutz has drawn a socio-political arc through history (German and international) with her picture cycles: Whether intimate glimpses of the private life of the individual or representations of the chancellor in official poses, whether portrait of a homeless person or the dangerous crushed by refugees on the Mediterranean, the protest against brown coal mining or portraits of people particularly committed to social democracy, human rights and the peace movement.

The starting point is always the press photograph: Kutz transfers the motif onto the canvas using the old master method with a grid, and then uses his special painting technique to process it in enamels with egg tempera and oil paints.
Through omissions, color changes and changes in the composition of the people, the resulting painting refers to the historical and/or private event.

This gains significance for the viewer through its notoriety as a work of art, through its size and alienation, and leaves him ample room for his own interpretations through pure memory.
