  • About the Artist

Born in 1990 in Bayeux, he lives and works in Paris.

After completing a student exchange at CalArts (Los Angeles) and writing a thesis on the emergence of plants in contemporary art, he graduated in 2014 from the Beaux-arts de Paris.

Since then, he has participated in numerous group exhibitions and site-specific projects such as Nuit Blanche Paris 2018 or Embellir Paris en 2019. He was the guest of various residencies and engaged in several projects with The Tropicool Company.

Winner of the Biennale de la jeune création 2016, he realized in the context of a creative residency at La Graineterie art center in 2017 his first solo exhibition No Lifeguard on Duty, supported by the Bourse des Amis des Beaux-Arts de Paris.

For his second solo exhibition Etant donnés, in 2019, he explores his artistic approach under the prism of Duchampian processes at the Laurence Bernard Gallery in Geneva.

In 2020, he is a finalist for the Audi Talents prize. 2021 will be for him the year of collaborations, notably with Comme des Garçons and Cointreau.

Artistic approach:

Rooted in the issues of tropicalism, Florian Viel's work uses the springs of an imagery constructed through the Western prism.

Between the deconstruction of stereotypes and the desacralization of art, the artist develops works with a smoothed aesthetic, which evacuate the trace of the artist's hand and gesture. If the object dominated before his reflection, the device of the installation occupies today the center of the preoccupations of an artist who is interested in the concept of total work, and since recently in that of works practicable by the public. Beyond a formal reflection, he proposes above all an experience. Aware of contemporary issues, he gradually introduces an eco-logical look in his works.
