Ferran Garcia Sevilla (Palma de Mallorca, Spain, 1949), moved to Barcelona at the end of the 1960s to study. He graduated Modern and Contemporary History in 1972 and Art History in 1974. Between 1975 and 1981 he thought contemporary art at the Faculty of History, and from 1981 to 1985 thought painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts. He wrote a doctoral thesis on conceptual art, and in the 1970s was an active member of the group of artists who developed the Catalan Conceptual Art Movement. Since 1978, he dedicated to analytical painting and he showed his first works in France invited by Marcelin Pleynet. He was especially interested in Maoism, structuralism and Ludwig Wittgenstein’s philosophy. In 1982, he travelled to the United States for the first time, and also to the Sahara. Interested in oriental philosophy and art, he later travelled to Egypt, India, Thailand, Tibet, and Iran, among other places. In 1985, he lived temporarily in Paris. By the end of the 1980s, he had received great international recognition, showing regularly throughout Europe and having solo institutional shows in the United Kingdom, Spain, France, and Japan. In 1985, he presented his works at Riverside Studios London, and the following year in Spain and at the Venice Biennale. In 1987, the Musée des Beaux Arts de Nimes (France) organized his first retrospective, and subsequently he was selected for the 8th edition of Documenta Kassel. In 1989, he exhibited in Barcelona, Madrid and Tokyo. In 1996, he represented Spain at the São Paulo Biennial and in 1998 he exhibited at the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno of Valencia (Spain). His latest retrospective was held in Dublin at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 2010, and the show later travelled to the Museo Patio Herreriano of Valladolid (Spain). In April 2018, RocioSantaCruz gallery organized the exhibition of his latest artistic project, Tryptych The War, Simple pages et al. The works of Ferran Garcia Sevilla form part of important collections, such as the Patio Herreriano Museum (Valladolid), the Serralves Foundation (Porto), Les Abbatoirs Frac Midi-Pyrénées (Toulouse), the Centre Pompidou (Paris), MACBA (Barcelona), and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid) among others.
