  • About the Artist

Aboriginal Australian painter Kudditji Kngwarreye captures the mesmeric light of the Australian desert in vividly colorful abstract paintings. Starting with the traditional dot paintings that made his older sister, painter Emily Kngwarreye, very successful, he evolved his own practice of free, sweeping brushstrokes and merging fields of color. This signaled a shift from the preoccupation with the inherited iconography of his people—concerning astronomy, abstract representations of laws, and mythology—towards an emphasis on the subjective experience of his native land, skies, and light. Kngwarreye’s work is primarily appreciated for its ability to merge the language of Color Field abstraction with the mystical art practices of his Emu tribe.
