  • Curriculum Vitae

Carlos Alves was born in the countryside town of Monte Castelo, in Brazil to a multi-cultured home and environment that introduced him not only to the corporate world, but also the world of yarns and threads, as his mother’s family heralds from Italy and brought along a strong tradition of needlework, which can interestingly be seen in Alves’ structured pieces. After leaving a successful career as a Financial Director of GM–Locomotive Division in Brazil, and as a Project Manager for Operations and Technology at Citi-bank, USA, Carlos Cesar Alves started his art career in a group exhibition at Leiter Gallery in the Design District, Miami. His first debut in the art world was a success and all the artworks displayed were sold at the opening thus making Alves an artist worth following. His unique creations are completely surreal, and you, as the observer, will spend hours admiring and exploring the details of the extraordinary work produced by this unusual and gifted artist. This self-taught, colorblind artist, who only sees in shades of grey, started his flourishing career in 2006 using mixed media to create colorful, intricate, sophisticated and engaging artworks. Carlos believes that because he only sees in shades of grey, and without relying on perceived color combinations, he is able to delve deeper into his imagination, and his boundaries are thus limitless allowing him to create outside the parameters. Yet, he has an intricate color-coding system for mixing, pigments where he chronicles each hue, paint brand and amount used in his creations. Alves finds inspiration in many ways from: day to day life, in the form of his dreams, which then causes him to get up in the middle of the night and start painting what he saw in his dreams. Inspiration, also comes from, flashes he sees in his mind’s eye which become the skeleton of an artwork; this is something that he says happens all the time. Alves, then goes to his studio, says a prayer and starts painting. The final result is, most of the time, exactly as the image that was seen in the flashes. Before starting each and every one of his works Alves sends up a silent prayer and also uses a blessed oil in all his works, which is a symbolic act, because he believes that act of praying and blessing his work with the oil, opens a channel, or door with the cosmos which then allows him to receive those images and transfer them through brush strokes or to execute a composition with all the different materials that used to create his mixed media pieces.
