About the fair

ARTESANTANDER faces the 2018 edition with its “Solo Projects” format, shaped in conformity to a need of the art market, and a way of exhibiting which is more synchronized with society in general.

42 national and international contemporary art galleries (paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, new technological supports, graphic work, drawing, and multiple).

12 galleries from Madrid, 4 coming from the Valencian Community, 4 from Andalusia, 3 coming from Vizcaya, other 3 from the Asturias, in addition to the 6 members from Cantabria (members of the Galician Association of Cantabria). International participation: 2 German, one Polish, one Italian, and two coming from Latin America: one Mexican and the other one Cuban.

97 projects presented, 90 definitely received the approval by the Selection committee, composed for this edition by: Beatriz Espejo (curator and contemporary art historian), Susana Blas (art critic), Emilio Navarro (cultural manager and art curator), Moisés Pérez de Albéniz (gallerist), and José Manuel Navacerrada (art collector).

All this is possible thanks to the full support of the two major institutions which organized the fair (Ministry of Culture, Education, and Sports of the Government of Cantabria and Santander City Council) and his management team; what allows them to remain expectant to everything that can enhance the fair and adapt to different scenarios.

The Fair will coincide with the Symposium “The new Encyclopedists: the artist as a collector / The collector as an artist”, which will be held between the 16h and the 18th within the International University Menéndez Pelayo  Program (UIMP), - this initiative is carried out jointly with the Contemporary Art Institute (IAC) and the Association of Contemporary Art Private Collectors 9915, in collaboration with Foundation Banco Santander and the DKV Foundation

Among the news of this edition: the expansion of the number of members of the Fair Selection Committee, the decision that each gallery presents a single artist in its expository project, and the presence of the ENAIRE Foundation, which will exhibit its art project for Santander, with a stand ships of Gamazo, and the Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism that will also have prominence in the exhibition space.

ARTESANTANDER maintains the Collectors Program, from this moment encouraging the presence of museum directors, art centers, and collections, with the intention of becoming an observatory of proposals, a “seedbed” of artists accessible to the heads of contemporary art at both a national and international level.

The Urban Visions Program (artistic interventions in the city) is extended with the new location managed by the company Masaveu Aparcamientos (Plaza de Numancia) next to the usual ones: Parking Plaza del Machichaco (former Plaza de las Cachavas), collaboration with Ferry Parking; Parking Calle Castelar and Plaza de la Esperanza, collaboration with Interparking; Parking Plaza de Pombo, collaboration with Empark.

NEWS IN THIS NEW EDITION

• Expansion of the number of members of the Selection Committee: For the first time, Artesantander passes from three to five members, in addition to the three participants from previous editions, Beatriz Espejo and Susana Blas join the previous roster (Moisés Pérez de Albéniz, José Manuel Navacerrada and Emilio Navarro) to accommodate other perspectives and opinions in the selection of projects, bearing in mind that we are a participation fair strictly by invitation from the projects presented.

• Each gallery can only present ONE UNIQUE PROJECT with a SINGLE ARTIST. This eliminates the possibility of previous editions of presenting several projects by galleries.

• New image of the fair, created by the designer María José Arce, in charge of elaborating the entire image of Artesantander 2018.

• New web page. With a more graphic design giving priority to the artists and selected projects.
